‘His wit and smile brightened our days’ – Heartbreaking tributes paid to ‘anchor’ barman in popular pub following death

STAFF and locals of a popular Dublin pub have been left heartbroken after a “wonderful” barman suddenly died.

Popular city centre pub Toners on Dublin’s Baggot Street has paid tribute to its “wonderful” barman Tom Hourican.

Tom died suddenly on Wednesday, September 25, leaving staff at the bar devastated.

The popular bar has now taken to social media to share a heartbreaking tribute.

The pub wrote on Facebook : “The owners, management and staff of Toners Pub Baggot Street are saddened to announce the death of our wonderful bar man, Tom Hourican.

“His dedication, tireless effort and work ethic cannot be replaced however the standards set by Tom will endure within Toners.

“His wit and smile brightened our days. Tom was an anchor within the pub and we knew if Tom was working we were in good hands.

“He will be sorely missed as a colleague and as a friend and our heartfelt sympathies are with everyone who had the pleasure to know our Tom. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Customers at the pub also took to the comments to share their condolences, as well as memories of being served by Tom over the years.

One person wrote: “So sad. Sympathy to the family and you guys in Toners bar. What a great man and always friendly even during Covid times. Rest Easy man.”

Another said: “Shocked to hear this news I knew Tom from his Smiths days on Haddington Road.

“Always an enjoyable chat particularly when it came to Dublin GAA hurling. Thanks for all Tom and safe journey to your next station.”

A former colleague added: “Omg. Very saddened to hear this. I worked with Tom in Corrigans pharmacy during the pandemic. He was a pure gentleman.”

Tom’s remains are set to be removed on Monday morning to Glasnevin Crematorium Chapel, followed by a cremation service at 10am.

His official death notice reads: “Thomas will be very sadly missed and remembered with love by his son Ethan, his partner Carol, Susan and aunty Eilis, his beloved sisters Oonagh, Anne, Deirdre, Fiona and Aishling, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, work colleagues and friends.”
