GARDAÍ are investigating two separate incidents in Cork which saw a hand grenade being thrown at a house and an petrol attack at a pub.
The two incidents are separate and unrelated, with Gardaí, Defence Forces Explosives & Ordinance Disposal experts and Cork Fire Brigade being called to the Ballyvolane area of Cork city for both.


The first incident saw a man involved in an altercation with staff at a pub in the area.
After leaving the establishment, he returned shortly later armed with a slash hook.
Following a second altercation, he left and returned for a third time with a canister of petrol.
He then attempted to douse the property with petrol shortly after 11pm on Sunday night.
A fire broke out but was quickly put out by Cork Fire Brigade once they arrived.
The man, in his 30s, was detained at the scene and is currently in custody in Mayfield Garda Station.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí responded to report of an incident of criminal damage at a business premises on Ballincollie Road, Ballyvolane, Cork city yesterday, Sunday 1st September 2024.
“The incident occurred at approximately 10.50pm. There were no reports of injuries.
“A man (30s) was arrested in relation to the incident and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 at a Garda Station in Cork.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
A separate incident saw Gardaí arriving to a house in the Ballyvolane area after reports of a hand grenade being thrown.
The device is said to have landed on the front garden and Gardaí and Army EOD experts rushed to the scene.
Officers have examined the device thrown and it is understood that it was viable but had not been detonated.
The incident saw a number of homes in the area being evacuated shortly after midnight as experts dealt with the device.
The device was rendered as safe and was later taken to Collins Barracks for analysis.
Residents in the area were then given the all clear to return to their homes shortly after 3am.
A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí responded to reports of the discharge of a firearm at a location Ballyvolane, Cork city shortly after midnight on Monday 2nd September 2024.
“On arrival a suspect device was subsequently discovered. The area was evacuated and a cordon put in place.
“The services of the Irish Defence Forces Ordnance Disposal team were requested and they conducted a controlled explosion.
“The occupants of the residences which were evacuated have since been allowed to return to their properties.
“There were no reports of injuries or damage. The scene is currently being held for examination.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
